Sal Restivo, Ph.D. '58
Professor, Author, Researcher



Dr. Sal Restivo is Professor of Sociology and Science Studies in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He has been a leading researcher in the sociology of science and mathematics for more than two decades. He is the founding director of the Ph.D. program in Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer, one of the first Ph.D. programs in this field in the world. Dr. Restivo is also the founding editor of the State University of New York Press series in Science, Technology and Society. He has published seven books and numerous articles on the sociology and anthropology of science and mathematics. His book, The Social Relations of Physics, Mysticism, and Mathematics, has become a classic. He has lectured widely in North America, Europe and Eastern Europe, and has standing invitation to lecture in China and India. His work has been translated into Chinese, Romanian, Russian, and Swedish.

During the course of his career, Dr. Restivo has carried out enthnographic studies of laboratories, done research on the historical sociology of science and mathematics, studied and been a consultant on problems of science policy, and worked on problems in the education of scientists and engineers. He is currently developing a sociological theory of mind and thinking in collaboration with Randall Collins of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Restivo’s work on the sociology of mathematics has been extremely influential in the field of mathematics education, most notable in Great Britain. Dr. Restivo is internationally recognized as on of the leading researchers and social theorists in the sociology of science.
